Never Really Gone…

A poem I wrote last week after wounds resurfaced…

I thought I lost you.
Where have you been?
I stopped looking, actually.
I counted you as gone.

I thought maybe you’d never come back.
I moved on, so I thought, so I hoped.
Then you showed up.
You returned.

Wounds opened again.
The pain, the searing pain that I thought was gone.
Again, you walked right back into my life, uninvited.
Unexpected.

Grief is never really gone. It just is.
